Turning off automatic installation of drivers

Filed Under (Tips & Tricks) by admin on 13-04-2010

Windows 7 updates have been reported to automatically detect device driver requirements of the client system and install later versions of the drivers. However, the problem here is that you may have custom installed another specific driver version based on the compatibility of the existing device, and the auto-update overwrites the files. Even on trying to update the driver once again, you will land up with a message indicating that the latest/ most apt driver is already available on the system.

You can, however, prevent the automatic installation of drivers on your windows 7 client by configuring a few settings from the Control Panel.

Get to the “Device Installation Setting” UI and turn off the driver download option. Selecting the “No…” option will allow you a few more choices – “Install driver software from Windows Update if it is not found on my computer “and “Never install driver software from Windows Update” apart from the auto update. You may generally disable all driver updates using the “Never…” option.

Alternatively you could also set a local policy to prevent driver updates. Using the local policy editor traverse to the device installation options: Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System->Device Installation

From the available list of options, enable “Prevent Installation of Devices not described by other policy settings” and restart the system. Disable the option whenever you manually install the custom driver version.

Yet another to way to prevent automatic driver updates at the device level is from the Device manager. Select the required device, get to the driver tab and check the disable option.

Use the most suitable option as per your requirements to turn off automatic installation of drivers.
