According to Microsoft documentation, Error Codes 80070422, 80244019 and or 8DDD0018 during Windows Update usually occur when the Windows Automatic Update feature has been turned off. The documentation further states that the most common cause for the setting change is the malware / virus that has found its way into the PC. To resolve the issue, Microsoft recommends a virus scan, followed by a restart of the “Windows Update” and dependent services. You could refer to this Windows site for more details.
Apart from checking for viruses, you could also check if your antivirus or firewall settings are preventing the update from going through. Also verify the network connectivity to the server from where updates are being installed. In a few cases, users have discovered that the server being inaccessible was the cause for the failure of the update.
In Windows 7 or its predecessor Vista, the update error will be written to the log file located at c:\windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log file. The Error message recorded will read as “SelfUpdate Failure Software Synchronization Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0×80070422”.
Main causes for the problem include a disabled Windows Update service as we’ve seen earlier. The error will occur even if the startup type of the service is not “Automatic”. The issue will still persist if the startup type of another service “Windows Modules Installer” has not been set as “Manual”.
Using Administrator priveleges set the startup type of the “Windows Update” service to “Automatic” and the “Windows Modules Installer” to “Manual” from Control panel->Administrative Tools-> Services menu option. Confirm Administrator credentials if prompted. Ensure that the Windows Update service is up and running again and check if the error surfaces again.
