Windows 7 Ultimate: Fixing a blank screen after sleep mode

Filed Under (Problems) by admin on 19-01-2010

Many Windows 7 users who’ve opted for the Ultimate version have reported a blank screen once the system gets out of the sleep mode. The problem is not specific to any machine make; however, it is attributable to one of the recent patches released by Microsoft over the past few weeks.

A few workarounds are available for the problem, but there may not be a clear cut solution as the cause has still not been identified explicitly. Microsoft’s knowledge base article says that under heavy load, Windows 7 may not respond at all. You could check out this post for the exact problem description and a hot fix.

Another fix from prevx is aimed at rectifying a blank screen issue, about two weeks old, probably due to lock down of registry keys after a Windows update or a security software installation. The fix, though for a windows update, doesn’t identify the problematic patch. If it sounds similar to your problem, try the fix, after backing up essential content as always. In yet a few other cases, a BIOS update has helped to do away with the problem.

Setting the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface ACPI sleep mode to S3 and enabling hybrid sleep also seems to correct the problem. However, ACPI itself will be installed correctly only if all components are present on Windows setup support power management. According to Microsoft help, legacy components such as Industry Standard Architecture components and an out-date bios are likely to hinder ACPI installation.

If none of the above solutions work, you’ll have to patiently wait it out! Do not respond to any of the reboot or other prompts that you may encounter in the process. After a long wait you may be lucky enough to see a blue screen indicating a driver error before windows reboots on its own, resolving the issue in the process.
