Internal error 0×80070057 (Backup windows 7)

Filed Under (Problems) by admin on 22-03-2010

Several users running the final release of the Windows 7 professional seem to have had a problem with the Backup Utility in Windows 7. Earlier, we saw another specific backup error which was plaguing users, for which workarounds have already been posted.

The error message displayed is not pretty indescript – “The parameter is incorrect.”

First option would be to check and rectify bad sectors on the disk if any. Changing backup path to a physical drive and removing all external disks may also be of help.

The problem in the meanwhile has been attributed to regional locale settings like the decimal separatpr and a few third party tools such as ‘Gnu Privacy Guard’ (GnuPG) interfering with the Backup process. Setting the decimal separator to a dot “.”, and uninstalling the GnuPG are two other workarounds proposed.

You could also increase the size of the virtual memory to an optimum value so that the required registry entries are written and accessed correctly on program execution. Here’s one registry hack that seems to have solved this specific problem. Backup the relevant registry key before making the changes.

Using the registry editor search for “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Windows “. Look for a “System” subfolder, and if not present create the entry. Right click on the entry and add a new DWORD by name ”CopyFileBufferedSynchronousIo” and set its value as “1”. Restart the system and the PC is ready to continue with the backup function.

Other things you’ll have to look out for is the compression type, clashing scheduled tasks interfering with the files being backed up like scans etc., and problem third party software. If you are still unable to fix the issue, there are of course a whole lot of free backup utilities on the net you could use until the problem is officially solved.
